Acclaimed chef and restaurateur John McClements knows a thing or two about running restaurants. With a Michelin star already under his belt for his first restaurant on Twickenham Green, he opened the first Ma Cuisine in Twickenham in 2003 with the help of Dominique Séjourné. The following year, the second Ma Cuisine opened in Kew and is now a firm favourite among Kew residents. In between opening a couple of nearby tapas restaurants, Ma Cuisine Barnes became the third bistro in McClements' portfolio. John also felt there was a real gap in the market for a traditional British grill, so reinvented his original restaurant as The Grill Room in 2008.

Ma Cuisine is based on the traditional 1950s French bistro; the black and white tiled floor, French impressionist posters and gingham tablecloths were all selected to create the perfect environment to enjoy French cuisine at its best. The menu oozes French rustic cooking with starters such as black pudding en croute with Dijon mustard sauce, and coq au vin or cassoulet as tempting mains, and naturally you can expect creme brûlée and tarte tatin as staples of the dessert menu. In addition to the full à la carte menu, an excellent value set lunch is also offered most days - great for business lunches or lazy afternoons.

The steaks at The Grill Room are outstanding. McClements travelled the UK looking at how farms reared their animals before finally choosing the Aberdeen Angus, mainly for its tenderness and flavour. The meat is matured on the premises for a minimum of 32 days, hand cut in the kitchen and served with a choice of homemade sauces. They also offer a good selection of shellfish from West Sussex and Devon, and serve up classic fish and chips with mushy peas. Starters include potted crab and prawn cocktail, and many other British favourites are served from the oven such as Lancashire hot pot and shin of beef. Desserts don't disappoint either with traditional sherry trifle and 'chock-a-block Stanley' - a chocolate ice cream slice with Baileys.

In 2005, Ma Cuisine Twickenham won the Evening Standard London Tonight Award for 'Best Restaurant', and all three Ma Cuisine restaurants have been awarded a 'Bib Gourmand' from Michelin for quality food at reasonable prices - but the best recommendation comes from the happy customers that flock to these delightful establishments week after week.
