Having been around for about 150 years, this wonderful establishment is something of an institution in the St Margarets area. Its appeal reaches far beyond the immediate community however; this eatery draws in visitors from much further afield. The decor is a comfortable blend of shabby chic and modern urban; there's wooden flooring, exposed brickwork, retro wallpaper and feature chandeliers, along with vintage lampshades and an open fireplace.

The changeable à la carte catalogues an array of modern British dishes. Think herbcrusted Devon lamb rump with carrot purée, fondant potato and rosemary jus; roasted organic salmon accompanied by a leek and clam chowder; and Hampshire pork fillet wrapped in prosciutto with butternut mash and nectarine and pepper salsa. This 21st-Century pub and restaurant hasn't snubbed the old classics though, just given them a bit of a makeover. For instance, the burgers are made with Angus beef and come with Bloody Mary ketchup, while the fish and chips feature beer-battered North Sea haddock. Vegetarians are in for a treat too, courtesy of dishes such as aubergine and apricot tagine with cumin flatbread and kachumber salad. Breakfasts are available on Saturdays, and the chefs prepare traditional roast lunches on Sundays.

For the St Margarets chefs, good-quality ingredients are paramount. All produce is fresh, seasonal and predominantly British; fish comes from sustainable stock wherever possible and all meat can be traced from farm to fork
