Burley Woodhead seems like a good place for a hermit - a steep ascent from the A65 brings you to a quiet village of stone houses and picturesque views. A true hermit would perhaps dine alone on berries and the occasional snared rabbit, but a more pragmatic type would head into the warmth and good company of The Hermit, with its low-beamed ceilings, classic beers and wholesome home cooking. It's the kind of place you want to curl up in all afternoon with a pint and newspaper.

Our meal included some proper northern staples like black pudding, steak and kidney pie and Wensleydale cheese, all washed down with locally brewed Timothy Taylor's Landlord ale. My black pudding and bacon starter came with a salad given extra crunch by celery, spring onion and radish. My partner's soft scallops were encased in a flaky crust and served with a rich creamy sauce. Hearty main courses followed - for my partner a chicken breast bathed in a leek and Stilton sauce and for me a sizeable slice of proper steak and kidney pie with a pile of buttery mash. We rounded off our meal with a colourful cheeseboard and rich dark coffees. The Hermit Inn should certainly be enjoyed by more than just oneself
