Spacious and quintessentially English, The Chairmakers is a country pub pulling pints and serving up special homemade food in perfect harmony. The roomy restaurant is brightly decorated but maintains features such as wooden floors, beamed ceilings and inviting window bays, and is the backdrop for the traditional, hearty pub fayre on offer.

The pick of the starters include game and winter vegetable soup with mini dumplings and sour-dough bread, while my baked crab and avocado dip with warm pitta and tortilla chips for dunking was a promising start indeed. One of the most popular of the generous main courses, the cedar-plank sea bass fillets, are laid on planks of cedar wood and cooked so they take in the flavour, then served with teriyaki stir-fried noodles or Dauphinois potatoes. The new mini pie combo - one beef and mushroom and one chicken and leek - comes with a heap of creamy mash, sweet potato, mushy peas and braised cabbage, while the wild mushroom risotto with Parmesan and garlic and root vegetable chips will satisfy even the grandest of appetites, whether you are a vegetarian or not.

Even after such a filling and hearty main course, diners might find it hard to avoid being tempted by dessert, brimming as the menu is with a number of homemade puddings. You can expect to find all the classics, like exceptional fruit crumbles and naughty, but oh so nice, sticky toffee pudding.

After your meal, relax by the fire in the cosy bar and have a quiet leisurely drink, with a number of cask ales to choose from, including a selection from Fuller's. There is also a large garden perfect for alfresco dining and, even when the weather is chilly, you can take your drinks outside to the small patio with its outdoor heater. This tranquil rural retreat is just a short journey from Portsmouth and worth seeking out. Wind down and relax at The Chairmakers.
