Walking into Le Pain Quotidien on Exhibition Road, with its chunky wooden tables and aroma of fresh bread, is a little like wandering into the kitchen of a cosy country cottage. The main difference, of course, is that the place is absolutely buzzing with customers, and you get the impression this popular local eatery is busy all week.

To start, we shared a plate of deliciously rich organic paté (almost everything here is organic) and followed this with a sweet and spicy Caribbean vegetable brew. As we moved on to the main course, I realised this is one of those establishments that can pleasantly overwhelm you with choice. There was smoked chicken tartine, an Atlantic prawn salad with avocado and mango, and a handful of other tempting possibilities displayed on the specials board. In the end I plumped for an organic chicken pie and didn't regret it - a light, flaky pastry lid softly crumbled to reveal a creamy sauce of tender meat and diced vegetables. A sweet raspberry tart and a generously proportioned chocolate cookie rounded off this consummate dining experience, right in the heart of South Kensington. Thoroughly recommended.
