First-class dining just seconds from Clapham North tube station - You better believe it. Ring the bell next to the discreetly marked door and you will be ushered into a stylish first-floor dining room that feels a million miles away from the pubs and shops of the hectic high street below. Grab a seat at the slick white bar while you decide what to eat - the deliciously inventive cocktails themselves are a course worth savouring. Opt for a classic peach Bellini or a Martini, or tantalise your tastebuds with a refreshing Out of Thyme - blueberries gently muddled with thyme, blueberry syrup, lemon juice and Plymouth sloe gin, topped up with Champagne.

Thoughtfully constructed amuse-bouches are the signal that you are in for a culinary treat. Chef Chris Sutherland's modern European menu is centred around exciting dishes, prepared using seasonal produce and quality ingredients. Nori-wrapped mackerel and foie gras and chicken liver parfait with macadamia nuts and pineapple chutney are highlights among the starters, while main courses include perfectly cooked rib-eye steak, flaky and light hake with crushed ratte potatoes and samphire, and braised ox cheek with olive oil mash, red wine jus and buttered carrots. The emphasis here is on attention to detail - from the crunchy triple-cooked chips and the wine list divided into grape varieties, to the tastefully decorated bathrooms with L'Occitane goodies and individual hand towels. The intimate dining room is decorated with arty black and white wallpaper depicting the local area - think out-of-focus negatives - while the circular wooden tables and armchair-style seats add a homely atmosphere. The perfect complement to the dessert menu, which includes brandy-caramelised pineapple and hot chocolate, orange and hazelnut pudding, are the dessert cocktails - as if you needed any excuse to sample more of four o nine's expert mixologist's creations. Try the Espresso Martini - a single shot of espresso shaken with vanilla vodka, Kahlóa and vanilla sugar - or the tangy Lemon Meringue Martini made with citron vodka, Baileys and Italian limoncello
