Esca delicatessen and café does 'rustic' extremely well. Everything is made fresh on the day it is sold, so visit for lunch and be richly rewarded with meals of fine-quality ingredients and generous portions.

Heartily recommended is the delicious barbecue chicken breast wrapped in bacon and dotted with sesame seeds, which went down terrifically well with sweet roasted butternut squash covered in Greek yoghurt. Fans of cured meat should gravitate towards cold roast potato and chorizo salad, which showcases wonderfully strong - almost chocolaty - chorizo, unlike anything you'll find in a supermarket.

All of the salads sampled were fresh and crisp, the chicken Caesar being a particular highlight with its enormous croutons. The spicy prawns were juicy and fat and gratefully washed down with a bottle of clean, citrusy and very reasonably priced Borsao White Macabeo 2010 (a Spanish wine from the Campo De Borja region). Tables at Esca are communal but still allow for intimacy between diners, especially on quieter days. All in all, the relaxed Continental atmosphere is perfect for a casual lunch between friends.
