Worthy of a spot in central London’s sophisticated dining scene, No.97 in Surbiton is fresh, boasting elegant flair. We settled by the window to observe the busy open kitchen behind the central open bar, which was buzzing with activity. We started with beautifully ornate cucumber gazpacho adorned with kohlrabi, apple and avocado, and pressed rabbit with heritage carrot and mustard seeds. For me, a main course of Barbary duck served pink with celeriac, cherries, girolles and almond followed, while my partner sampled the hake with Sardinianstyle fregola, courgette and Palourde clams. The heritage fine beans with confit tomato and the hasselback potatoes provided a flavoursome accompaniment. Desserts of lemon custard with blackcurrant sorbet, white chocolate crumble, lemon curd and lavender, and the strawberry and raspberry meringue with yoghurt, basil and white chocolate were heavenly.

When it comes to drinks, the star attraction at No.97 is gin, with gin cocktails served downstairs in the dedicated Gin Den. I savoured the Alchemist’s Brew: a blend of Copperhead Black Batch gin balanced with Earl Grey Tea and Lemon Soda, while my partner had the Tom Collins. The Old Tom gin from Hayman Distillers was paired magnificently with Sicilian lemon tonic for a twist on the classic. No.97 is a hugely exciting and welcome addition to this suburban neck of the woods; the entire drinking and dining experience is unique from start to finish.
