The beautiful garden setting and its graceful architecture give a regal feel to The Orangery at Kensington Palace. Queen Anne allegedly had this elegant greenhouse built to protect her precious citrus trees from the harsh winter frosts and, as you might imagine, it provided a spectacular backdrop for fashionable court entertaining. Today, we all have the pleasure of dining here, whether it's outside on the handsome terrace or inside under a vaulted ceiling, admiring the statued alcoves and panelled walls.

The modern British menu here is simply divine. One Sunday lunchtime, I sampled the superior braised Shorthorn rib of beef, which melted in the mouth, with bone marrow, smooth mashed potato and an accompaniment of crispy kale. The Devon guinea fowl breast opposite was beautifully succulent, and roasted garlic, baby carrots, black cabbage and truffle jus were the perfect accompaniments. These generous servings were followed by a light and delicate lemongrass-infused panna cotta with a tropical fruit salsa and a theatrical orange baked Alaska served on a black slate - both were wonderfully presented.

With such grandeur at every turn, this is also a wonderful setting in which to enjoy quintessentially English afternoon tea - expect Grande Marques Champagne, an assortment of teas, delicate fine china, neat little best-of- British sandwiches and an assortment of beautiful cakes and pastries, followed by a stroll around the palace grounds and Kensington gardens free of charge
