The imposing Georgian facade of the 200-year-old listed Corus Hyde Park Hotel is undeniably grand. The hotel is situated in a pretty spot on Lancaster Gate, overlooking both Kensington Park Gardens and Park Lane. Once through the mirrored lobby and seated under the glass conservatory roof of the ground floor restaurant, the atmosphere of Corus Hyde Park Bar & Grill is congenial and intimate.

We headed to the bar to sip a Kir Royal and dry gin passion fruit cocktail and chatted to the friendly barman while we studied the menu at leisure and began making those all-important food choices. There are plenty of traditional and classic dishes on the à la carte menu to please the broad range of clientele. However, we gravitated towards the Malaysian à la carte menu, which showcases spicy curries that are loved by British diners.

We started our culinary journey with the chargrilled chicken satay, marinated in spices and served with a fresh peanut sauce, and homemade Malaysian fishcakes with coriander and a sweet chilli dip.

Our main courses consisted of the exotic-sounding kari kambing: lamb curry, with garlic, ginger and spices, all cooked in coconut milk and served with steamed rice. My partner’s rendang daging was a dark beef curry cooked with lemongrass, ginger, sambal and lots of roasted coconut. Our waiter was clued-up when it came to wine pairings, and matched our meal with the perfect glass. Our mains were filling in their own right but with dessert calling, choosing the creamy sago pudding and raspberry sorbet was a no-brainer. We then sat back and relaxed with an Irish Baileys coffee.

It’s worth jumping off the tourist bus to lap up the lunch deal, available every day from noon until 3pm, or maybe indulge in the afternoon cream tea. If you’re looking for value for money at lunch time, opt for the chef’s set menu, where two courses cost £16 per person, and three courses are priced at £21 per person. The bar menu is brimming with soups, sandwiches and lighter bites. With the option of retiring to one of the clean and modern bedrooms after a bite to eat, this glamorous hotel is even more tempting.
