On visiting Knightsbridge's Mari Vanna, expect to be transported back to Russia before the revolution, straight onto the set of a Chekov play. Lovingly decorated in a gorgeous homespun fin-de-siècle style, this stunning restaurant recently won 'Best New Design' in Time Out's Eating & Drinking Awards 2012.

Popular with London-based Russians looking for a taste of home, it was busy even on a rainy Monday night, with a lively buzz created by expectant diners. This London restaurant is one of six Mari Vanna branches, with other locations including Moscow, St Petersburg and New York.

As the decor suggests, the cuisine is traditional with plenty of comfort food, and includes regional specialities such as borscht soup, Siberian pelmeni dumplings and Georgian cheese bread. Our favourite starter was the delicate oladushki (courgette pancake) with lightly salted salmon and sour cream. Mains were hearty and satisfying - chicken fritters and golubtzi, which are cabbage leaves stuffed with rice, pork and veal. We enjoyed a sophisticated Georgian red wine, while many diners indulged in the extensive range of vodkas.

Mari Vanna is a delightful Russian oasis in the midst of very English Knightsbridge. Its mix of clientele may include football-club owners, but fear not, you don't need the wallet of a Russian tycoon to enjoy an evening here.
