Cast Iron Grill
If you’ve had a long day exploring museums or trawling Kensington’s shopping hotspots and you’re looking for some no-nonsense, quality sustenance, stroll down down Cromwell Road to Cast Iron Grill, housed within the London Marriott Hotel Kensington.
The service is reassuringly slick and efficient, as you would expect from a London hotel in a top neighbourhood. We took stock at the bar with cocktails: a British Spritz with gin and rhubarb flavours and an Old Cuban with Havana rum and Prosecco – the perfect way to kick-start the evening in style. Here, what you see is what you get – there are simple wooden tables and the interior is unfussy, with a blackboard on the wall illustrating the different cuts of steak. This certainly came in handy when we made our menu choices.
To start, we sampled the caramelised scallops with celeriac and Cumbrian ham, as well as crispy squid accompanied by a healthy serving of chopped chorizo, which gave the dish a kick of heat. For mains, it was obvious that the grill was going to feature highly. Signature dishes include the Cast Iron burger and range of steaks. I was tempted by the grilled sea bass with creamed spinach but on the cold, windy night we visited, comfort food was in order so it had to be steak and chips. After a helpful discussion with our waiter we chose a good bottle of shiraz to share and the rib-eye and the prime fillet steak to compare and contrast. It was a close call but the Béarnaise sauce with my rib-eye took top prize.
Next up, I happily sampled the milky vanilla jelly, which was served with sweet marshmallows, while my partner enjoyed the lovely tangy clementine tart, which came with a scoop of passion fruit mousse. We headed home vowing to return to sample the delights of the make-your-own sundae bar, where a choice of toppings and homemade ice cream flavours jostle for attention.
