Geales Restaurant has been keeping locals and various celebrities well-fed since it was established back in 1939. We visited the stylish Chelsea Green branch - younger sister of the original Notting Hill restaurant, located a stone's throw from fashionable King's Road.

In a nod to the proud heritage of the traditional British fish and chip shop, a sophisticated, contemporary decor was complemented by quirky gingham touches. However, the star of the show was of course the fish itself; the freshness was apparent in every bite as we sampled deep-fried whitebait, tempura softshell crab and battered cod. The beer batter on each was light and had a crunch that would satisfy even the fussiest of fried-food lovers. There are also options from dry land, such as juicy grilled steaks for those who don't fancy fish. No matter what the dish though, the accompanying chips have to be on par - and Geales' are perfect. Delightfully crunchy, they were certainly the best I've tasted. The dessert menu promises a great conclusion to your meal; the choice between the chocolate fudge cake and the lemon cheesecake was a real toughie, so we ended up having both.

The staff are attentive and friendly and have a real knowledge of the cuisine - their service was the cherry on top of a wonderful meal.
