Fantastic Italian food, served up in warm surroundings by even warmer staff - Bella Italia is an all-round winner. Whether you're visiting with your girlfriend or your grandmother, there is something on the menu to tempt everyone's tastebuds, at a price that will please all wallets.

They say when in Rome do as the Romans do; so when dining at Bella Italia, sit back, relax and enjoy all the fun and flavour of a real Italian restaurant. A Continental ambience is created by Italian maps and scenes on the walls, little earthenware candleholders on the tables, and fabulous aromas of garlic and wine from the kitchen. Most of the restaurants feature an open kitchen, which adds a little bit of theatre to your meal. See your dish being freshly prepared behind a pretty surround of copper pots and pans, before it arrives steaming to your table, where your server offers seasonings of milled black pepper and freshly grated Parmesan.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Starting at the beginning, kick off your evening or lunchtime treat with some delightfully crispy yet perfectly tender calamari, and a bubbling dish of mushrooms baked in a creamy mascarpone, spinach and garlic sauce. We soon saw why the mushrooms were accompanied by a hunk of focaccia - it came in very handy to mop up every last drop of the gorgeous sauce.

Main courses are nicely varied, with traditional pasta dishes and pizzas sitting alongside some great meat and fish options. The red-pesto-based pizza, loaded with roasted red and yellow peppers, olives, cherry tomatoes, red onion, mascarpone and buffalo mozzarella is a new favourite, while a divinely tender sirloin steak, with added greenery in the form of a rocket and Parmesan salad with a sticky balsamic dressing, will satisfy even the most hardto- please diners.

Never ones to believe that less is more, we simply had to order the Godfather dessert - a mountainous creation of chocolate fudge brownie, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, with cream and a generous helping of chocolatey toppings. To give it an extra touch of indulgence for the adults, add a shot of deliciously sweet and punchy amaretto.

And when the bill arrives at Bella, you'll be surprised at how little a full three-course meal (perhaps with a couple of glasses of lovely Montepulciano) comes to. To enjoy extra value for money, order from the set-price menu (available Sunday to Friday, noon until 7pm), which offers one course for just £5.95, two courses for £8.95, or three courses for £11.95.

The bambinos are also well looked after, with a healthy and tasty meal, dessert and drink costing just £5.25. Alternatively, you can now order large oven-baked dishes designed for the family to share; the little ones are sure to clamour for the traditional lasagne or the pollo alla crema - chicken breast, pancetta, red onion, peppers and penne pasta covered in an Italian wine sauce. It's settled - for delicious Italian fare the whole family will enjoy, it has to be Bella Italia.
