Rose and Crown
86 Highgate High Street, Highgate, North-London, N6 5HX
The Rose and Crown is a rare find, offering a delightful mix of English quaintness and distinctive charm. The building's façade presents it as a traditional pub; however, inside you'll find a sleek, modern dining space. Since becoming proprietor, Gareth Thomas has created a refined and welcoming venue which has built a strong local following. Gareth (chef profile page 170) had a stellar culinary education - he trained at Prue Leith's renowned cookery school and has worked under prestigious chefs like Jean- Christophe Novelli and Gary Rhodes. His menu exudes finesse and features top-end British food cooked with precision and flair. A starter of English asparagus soldiers with Scotch duck egg is an inventive twist on a traditional British classic, and the ballotine of foie gras, coupled with home-smoked duck breast and baby leaf salad tossed in a white truffle and white wine vinaigrette, is both contemporary and elegant. The Sunday lunch menu is also unmissable, featuring hearty meals served up with Gareth's trademark élan. There is also an impressive dessert menu, plus a stunning collection of international wines. During summer, guests can dine alfresco in the courtyard garden - the ideal place to enjoy a meal from Gareth's 'garden menu'. It comes as little surprise the Rose and Crown was featured in the 2011 edition of the prestigious Michelin Guide; down to the last detail, this superb restaurant will linger in your memory.
