The Havelock prides itself on being a gastropub that still very much adheres to the traditions of the British pub, and, with restaurant-standard food, I can confirm that it really does combine the best of both worlds. You can just have a pint and enjoy the traditional pub atmosphere (oak panels and all), but I would really recommend staying for a meal - the honey-roast figs stuffed with dolcelatte, red onion, green beans and baby spinach are beautiful, as are the deep-fried monkfish cheeks and tiger prawns, served with sweet chilli dipping sauce. For pub purists, the pork tenderloin and chargrilled bavette steak with chips, salad, garlic, tarragon and shallot butter are both wonderful. The food is on a rolling menu, which means it's always freshly sourced and cooked, although get there early for the pick of the menu. A wide range of draft beers are available, and there's usually a guest beer to try out too. The wine list is great, comprising 12 reds and 12 whites - again, beyond the scope and quality of your average pub.

Tucked away in the quiet and leafy residential area of Brook Green on the corner of Masbro and Irving Roads, the Havelock is nonetheless easily accessible: the nearest tube stations are Shepherd's Bush (Central Line), Hammersmith, Goldhawk Road and Olympia, which also has British Rail services.

The pub is spacious and elegantly furnished, and has a lovely patio area, perfect for an outdoor pub lunch, making it a great break away from the hustle and bustle of central London; indeed the single-course lunch menu is designed with the busy business-type in mind, so you won't overrun your lunch break (well not unless you want to). Dinner runs for a more leisurely three courses. The Havelock is also easily accessible from both the A40 and A4 for those coming from further afield - definitely a worthwhile journey. A word of warning, they don't take bookings here, so make sure you arrive early - this place is in demand.
