The Crown & Sceptre
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
We were plied with delicious refreshment as we stood at the bar soaking up the ambience, before heading through to the dining area with its large cast-iron stove fireplace. The menu features classic pub favourites and there are also specials available each day, which on our visit included the landlady's homemade lasagne. For my main course I chose the baked macaroni, cooked in a creamy tomato, cheese and herb sauce and served with garlic bread - the sauce proffered a perfectly rich consistency, which enticed even the carnivorous tastes of my partner. He plumped for the barbecue chicken gourmet burger, served in a toasted bun with house relish, salad garnish and tasty twisty fries (which I couldn't help sampling). The meals were wonderfully generous, but we found room for desserts of sticky toffee pudding and hot Belgian waffle with ice cream - fantastic finishers. Friendly service, flavoursome food and excellent value ensure this pleasant country pub in the heart of Croydon will continue to please many a punter for years to come.
