The Egyptian flag flutters behind a bar stocked with Mediterranean beers. On the night of our visit, staff were serving a diverse crowd of locals and intrepid travellers, all in relaxed conversation under low lights and sitting comfortably on cushions scattered amid the ornate furnishings. This is an established family business. The vision of owner Amr, Shisha Oui has evolved from a well-respected kebab shop to an atmospheric shisha restaurant. His mum still keeps careful vigil over her recipes, now lovingly recreated by the expert chefs. An epic menu reveals the cuisine of the Med and Lebanon. Among the patatas bravas and calamari, there are Middle Eastern treasures such as the popular baba ghanouj (spiced pureed aubergine), which is delicious. The grilled lamb cutlets are scrumptious with Lebanese tabouli - a seasoned couscous salad. If you're feeling adventurous, try the Moroccan chicken, seasoned with cinnamon, cream and mint. After this, a plate of nutty, sweet, sticky baklava goes well with a dark, aromatic espresso. This is wholesome food at very reasonable prices. Shisha Oui is something of a breath of fresh air, lending a new lease of life to this quiet corner of suburbia. Well worth seeking out, it is also handily located opposite Purley station
