Victoria Embankment, Westminster, Central London, WC2N 5DJ
The superb Hispaniola, permanently moored just off the Victoria Embankment, has come a long way since her days as a passenger ferry on the Clyde - she now boasts two comfortable, elegant dining decks and large windows offering striking views of the London Eye. In summer, guests can gaze over the Southbank at sunset with a cocktail in hand, and I'm reliably informed that the Cucumber Martini is the one to go for.

On the evening of our visit, the lower deck was buzzing with a private party, while the upper restaurant had a sophisticated and intimate feel. Our starters arrived promptly: my salmon timbale, with caviar and a yellow pepper coulis, was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked, while my fellow diner's colourful dish of plump scallops and juicy tiger prawns, with pea purée, black pudding, crispy pancetta and lemon oil, was heavenly. My main course of succulent belly of pork, served with truffle beurre noisette mash, cauliflower purée and spring greens, was drizzled with a rich red wine jus and proved to be skilfully executed. Meanwhile, my other half plumped for the exquisite rib-eye steak and triple-cooked chips with honey and Grand Marnier sauce - a traditional British meal with a contemporary twist. I'd definitely recommend leaving room for dessert. We finished with an impeccable blueberry and apple crumble with crème Anglaise and a zesty glazed orange soufflé, with orange coulis and candied orange.

It is clear that Hispaniola takes pride in its standards of service, and we were most impressed with the attentive staff. Visit once and my guess is you'll be back for more
