Herman Ze German was born out of a culinary hankering that English food outlets just could not satisfy. In 2005, two hungry Germans came to settle in the UK from the Black Forest and soon began to miss their native cuisine. The strongest of their cravings was that for traditional German sausages, which had been readily available to them at almost every restaurant and food stall in their home town.

The pair soon began importing sausages from their family butcher and, having started selling them in their new local pub in Brighton, realised they were onto a good thing. Two trailers were purchased and new business Herman ze German took to the road to feed festival-goers up and down the country. Two years, countless festivals and untold hours of travelling later, Herman ze German set up permanent shop in London. The crowds flocked to this quirky German take-out, and still continue to do so to this day. A second, larger location has recently opened in Soho, serving the same great fare in a restaurant-style setting, meaning guests can pull up a seat and enjoy the novel dishes in equally unique surroundings.

The sausages - still imported from the Black Forest, in case you were wondering - come in a handful of varieties, including bockwurst (smoky pork) and bratwurst (pork and veal). Always grilled, never fried, these are either served in a bun with onions to create a hotdog with a delicious difference, or chopped up in Herman's homemade warm tomato curry sauce. Sides include fries - cooked without oil and flavoured with Herman's special seasoning - and sauerkraut (a popular German dish of shredded pickled cabbage).

Such a feast needs something fitting to wash it all down with. Herman's fritz-cola is definitely worth a try; caffeine rich and far less sweet than your standard colas, this zingy alternative is the optimum refreshment. The selection of hot beverages, meanwhile, comes from independent supplier Union Coffee, who uses ethically sourced beans and hand roasts them for optimum flavour.
