Part of the fabric of Brick Lane, Café Bangla has occupied this site since 1989 and has been creating modern Bengali cuisine for Londoners and tourists ever since. You won't find any bland, modernist interior here. The walls are adorned with huge tableaux depicting fantastical scenes by the artist Kafait Hussain, alongside a giant portrait of Lady Diana, and the overall ambience is warm and inviting. Café Bangla is well-deserving of its numerous Curry Club nominations and the many Best Restaurant in Brick Lane awards it has received over the years.

The menu here is extensive, featuring lots of recognisable classics such as masala, tikka and passanda dishes. For the more adventurous, there is an Assamese (East Indian) section, as well as a host of fish from the Bay of Bengal to tempt you. On the recommendation of the knowledgeable staff, to start we shared some perfectly cooked padarakhi lamb chops, which were beautifully seasoned with ginger and roasted in the tandoori oven, and some delicious prawn puri, with a mixture of gently spiced and sweet and sour king prawns. It was a great way to start our meal.

Chef Mr Gulab Miah spoke passionately about his life-long love of cooking and of the recipes handed down and adapted through generations. His expertise was evident in our high-quality main courses of spicy, tender lamb with with black roast pepper and a fresh and fragrant king prawn coriander dish with rice, daal tarka and home-baked naan, the flavours of which were many and perfectly balanced. To accompany our dishes, we were treated to a brand-new side dish of aubergine and potato - it was truly delicious. We washed it all down with a tall bottle of refreshing Kingfisher beer and left feeling well and truly satisfied. Our fellow diners on the table next to us informed us that they had been coming here for 16 years, and thanks to Café Bangla's easygoing atmosphere, top-quality cuisine and excellent service, it's easy to see why
