Trying to select a curry house when walking down Brick Lane is one of life's hardest choices. Well, it used to be. Now I know to head to Bengal Village, a restaurant that serves authentic Bangladeshi dishes executed to an extremely high standard, in a setting straight out of Dhaka.

As we walked in, my companion and I were immersed in a bustling atmosphere and couldn't wait to see what the excitement was about. To begin, we both plumped for traditional options: the chicken tikka and a seekh kebab. Both were excellent, with just the right levels of spice, and perfect starter-sized portions. For the main event, we trusted our waiter's recommendations. He brought us two karahi dishes, a lamb karahi gosht and a karahi chicken. The sauces were delightfully rich and absolutely full of flavour, and both the lamb and chicken were extremely tender. The curries were served sizzling in a traditional korai, meaning our dishes had a lovely smoky quality. A fresh, soft naan and fluffy rice complemented our meals.

You will always find a good curry on Brick Lane but, if you ask me, Bengal Village's offering is among the fi nest
