There are many 'best of' lists for London, but any top ten that focuses on restaurants with the best view would have to include Northbank: a chic riverside restaurant near St Paul's Cathedral. It provides a breathtaking panoramic view of some of London's most iconic buildings and landmarks, such as the Tate Modern, Globe Theatre and Millennium Bridge.

Seated in a comfortable booth sipping our cocktails, the only thing that could distract us from this twinkling night-time vista was the impressive menu. On offer to us was a mouth-watering selection of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. There were specials too, of course, and a Cornish influence was evident throughout.

For starters, delicate scallops joined meaty black pudding and creamy cauliflower purée, raising expectations for the delights to come. My main course of venison with celeriac, parsnip purée and blackberry mead sauce melted in the mouth, and the juicy pink lamb worked perfectly with the sweet butternut purée and kale crisps. A New Zealand pinot gris and a North Italian red were perfectly matched to the excellent food, all thanks to a suggestion from Angelo, the friendly restaurant manager. Finally, a sweet but spiced pear crumble and indulgent chocolate with brittle and malt ice cream helped to prolong this very enjoyable dining experience.

For a taste of Cornwall in a most impressive London setting, you can't get better than Northbank
