The recorded voice on the number 38 bus from Victoria informs passengers when they're approaching Hard Rock Cafe. I can't imagine many restaurants in London have earned such landmark status. Nor can I imagine many restaurants having a queue outside on an ordinary Tuesday evening, more than 40 years after opening. But then, the Hard Rock Cafe is more than a restaurant; it's an icon.

The buzzing atmosphere, the smiling faces of the staff, the perfectly pitched music and the walls adorned with legendary rock memorabilia, all instantly set you up for a great evening.

The food is also exemplary. Menus comprise a mixture of classic dishes that have stood the test of time, and modern, imaginative options. As I sat reading through it, I wished I had two stomachs. I ordered the wings to start. Slow roasted with a smoky rub, they were served with a cool blue cheese dip, which perfectly offset the spice. My partner's plate of balsamic tomato bruschetta was equally exceptional, consisting of marinated tomato, fresh basil and Parmesan, served on light artisanal bread with herb cream cheese. For the main course I tucked into The Texan; barbecued chipotle chicken with crispy fried onions and jalapeños melted into two cheeses, all piled into a soft, lightly toasted brioche bun. It was scrumptious. My partner had the cowboy ribeye steak. His plate arrived filled with a magnificent 14oz of tender beef, beautifully grilled and topped with special butter, and accompanied by crunchy green beans and golden mash potato. To finish we opted for cheesecake made with Oreo pieces and fresh apple cobbler. The cheesecake had a wonderfully smooth texture, punctuated with a rewarding cookie crunch, while the cobbler was gently spiced and topped with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and walnuts.

Dining at Hard Rock Cafe is an experience, and while the food is high quality and the service professional, there's so much more on offer. Since Eric Clapton donated his guitar and claimed his favourite stool at the bar, the collection of memorabilia has grown to include over 77,000 pieces, and you'll find the best of it in The Vault rock museum located in the Rock Shop. This is truly a place to see and be seen and, you never know, you might even spot a celebrity at the next table.
