Hix Oyster & Chop House

Cowcross Street, Farringdon, Central London, EC1M 6BN
First a sausage factory and then the celebrated Rudland and Stubbs fish restaurant, Hix Oyster & Chop House's Cowcross Street locale sure has some heritage behind it. But, by making the canny decision of applying only the mildest of changes to the layout of this building, Mark Hix and his team have created a culinary paradise for the East London crowds.

Once you have admired the quaint wood flooring and panelling, not to mention had a gander at the chefs preparing dishes at the restaurant-floor oyster bar, the time to dine is upon you. Meat on the bone is the main focus here, using the best quality British meat available. It almost goes without saying that the oysters are a standout choice here, and with classics such as Maldon, Portland Pearls and Carlingford Lough to choose from - all at £2 each - it's easy to find yourself indulging even before the starters.

The menu at Hix Oyster & Chop House is constantly changing and every visit can yield something new. Established favourites such as the hanger steak with baked bone marrow and the chargrilled monkfish will always have a place in my heart, but it's a real testament to head chef Tom Hill's skill that he is able to create such a variation of seasonally appropriate dishes on such a regular basis. There is also a pre and post-theatre set menu available Monday to Saturday, and if you're heading to the restaurant en masse why not try the feast menu' Parties of eight or more can enjoy one of the six feast menus on offer (order in advance) which includes suckling pig or salmon and trout.

The Hix way of cooking has made its mark on London eating in a big way, and with the quality of British food on offer it's not hard to see why
