Antidote's impressive wine list draws in wine lovers from London and beyond - even London's sommeliers show up to sample from the range of French organic and biodynamic bins, sourced from independent vintners. So we were more than happy to accept a recommendation on our visit, and sampled a crisp white from the Gaillac region and a smooth pinot noir from the Loire Valley.

The cuisine served at Antidote is just as impressive as its wine list. The philosophy is, and has always been, to source the very best produce - local if possible - to create quality dishes which allow the natural flavours to shine through. A strong Normandy influence was evident in both our starters. I enjoyed a knockout dish of mussels, with a hearty British twist of bacon and cider, while my companion's smoked ham custard with peas and Roscoff onion purée was an unusual, delightful indulgence. These were eagerly followed by chicken tagine - aromatic and delicately spiced - and a succulent sirloin for myself. Cooked exactly to my requirements, it really hit the spot. We finished with an intense frothy chocolate dessert - perfect with a glass of Banyuls made from black grenache. The impeccable food was accompanied by a pleasant hum of conversation from surrounding diners
and discreet service from the waiting staff.

The mid-priced modern European menu offers bar snacks, small dishes, salads, steaks and daily specials. So, if a hard day's shopping in London's West End leaves you yearning for exceptional wines and quality dining, Antidote is the perfect remedy
