The Victoria - Highgate
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
The minute you walk in you'll notice dark wood panelling on all the walls and across the bar, with a lighter wooden floor to give the illusion of more space. There's an array of comfortable furniture, including expensive-looking leather chairs, bar stools and sofas and simple wooden dining chairs for you to relax into. Mirrors and silver radiator covers lend a contemporary edge, complementing the drawing room ambience. Pretty tea lights sit on every table beside cups of Trivial Pursuit cards to keep you entertained, and other games such as Monopoly and Scrabble are also available - perfect for whiling away a lazy afternoon. Larger church candles burn on the fireplace, windowsills and in the fabulous bay window, and fairylights sparkle on the large pot plants. There is also a small, heated outdoor garden, which, conveniently, is undercover.
The friendly and attentive staff help create a relaxing, upbeat and ultimately welcoming atmosphere. The overwhelming feeling emitted from The Victoria is that of ease and cosiness, and it's the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon or evening after you've indulged in too much roast dinner. Soft, unobtrusive music - loud enough to enjoy but not enough to intrude on your conversation - can be heard most evenings, giving the restaurant a relaxed vibe.
The real strength of The Victoria, however, is their award-winning food, which offers good hearty homemade fare at reasonable prices. The main menu offers a wide range of pub classics as well as more adventurous dishes for those who like to try something different. And don't forget to sample one of The Victoria's popular Sunday roasts, with a choice of lamb, chicken, beef or pork, as well as a vegetarian option.
