Paul has been offering the best in freshly baked bread and patisserie since 1889, and lives and breathes its 'Maison de Qualité' tagline. The bakers still make bread by hand using traditional methods - a process that takes seven hours and results in a top-quality loaf every time. This dedication to quality extends to Paul's entire range of snacks, sweet treats and baked delights.

The cafés on Bedford Street and Marylebone High Street both boast a wide-ranging menu of seasonal specialities, including a selection of artisan sandwiches, tartines, omelettes and salads, as well as a carefully selected wine list. I visited the elegant Bedford Street branch, which offers a taste of the laid-back Parisian lifestyle in the heart of Covent Garden.

I couldn't wait to tuck into my chèvre Provençale salad comprising creamy French goat's cheese, roasted peppers, sunblushed tomatoes and fresh bread. My companion raved about her poulet citron tartine - tender chicken marinated in an aromatic blend of lemon, tarragon, tomato and chives. After much deliberation, I plumped for the bilberry tart for dessert, which featured a crisp filo base with a moreish fruit filling. I also ordered a café gourmand - a hot drink served with three mini macarons. Paul's dedication to creating simple, quality French food has made me a firm fan
