We felt at ease as we settled in on a sunny Saturday afternoon. As the dedicated gin bar is positively bulging with British and international varieties, I couldn’t resist an elaborate gin-infused cocktail. Next, we were presented with an array of chef de cuisine Michael Dutnall’s dishes, beginning with magnificent slow-braised Blythburgh pork belly and some juicy hand-dived Scottish scallops with smoked celeriac purée, which were some of the best I’ve tasted. Just as we thought it couldn’t get any better, our mains arrived. The carefully crafted fish casserole, with sea bass, salmon, langoustines, scallops and mackerel in lobster sauce, was fresh and light, but the roasted lobster with line-caught mackerel, confit cherry tomatoes and a chicken demi-glace sauce really stole the show for me – every element was just sensational. To finish, a beautifully delicate caramel and pistachio éclair filled with vanilla ice cream, and rich chocolate brownies with a cooling mint parfait ended our meal on a high. To top off a fine dining experience, our host was knowledgeable, professional and attentive, and needless to say we will be making a return visit.
