Old Soho meets China at Bashan, where the classic exterior of a listed building opens into a space designed to evoke the atmosphere of an old Chinese county town.

The menu offers an excitingly spicy selection of food from the revolutionary province of Hunan in southern China. Favourite dishes include steamed fish with pickled chillies and General Tso's chicken, as well as farmhouse stir-fries like spicy dried radish with bacon. The menu also features dramatic centrepieces such as 'immortal' crab with chillies and preserved vegetables, and the exquisite lobster served on a bed of fresh mushrooms.

The atmosphere here is fun and casual, with a predominantly younger crowd. Bashan is also a favourite with theatre-goers and those headed out for a night on the town. The restaurant - complete with tiled eaves and puppet theatre - is a warren of dining spaces spread over four floors. Dried vegetables and traditional paper cuts adorn the walls of the farmhousestyle area downstairs; the lanternhung windows of the 'wine shop and tavern' on the ground floor look out onto Frith and Romilly Streets. A bright private room on the second floor is also available for special occasions.

Like its sister restaurant, Barshu, Bashan is no stranger to praise and was shortlisted for Time Out's 'Best New Restaurant' award in 2009.
