Barshu is London's premier Sichuanese restaurant, offering a delectable range of dishes from China's spiciest province. The jaws of first-time visitors drop at the sight of the spectacular sea bass in a sea of sizzling chilli oil, while regular customers come for their fix of Gong Bao prawns or the ever-popular dry-fried beans. In the kitchen, Sichuanese chefs conjure up the region's legendary flavours using seasonings imported directly from China.

The restaurant is known for its sophisticated atmosphere and beautifully presented food. An antique statue of the Buddha presides over the main room, while three smaller areas offer luxurious private dining. Award-winning Chinese food expert Fuchsia Dunlop advises the restaurant as a consultant, and only the most delicious dishes make it onto the menu. Sichuanese meals begin with cold appetisers, like the charmingly named smacked cucumbers, followed by main dishes served with steamed rice. The restaurant also offers some famous street snacks, such as dumplings in chilli oil sauce and dan dan noodles. As you might expect from Sichuan's spicy reputation, chillies and mouthnumbing Sichuan pepper feature prominently; but there are also plenty of scrumptious mild dishes for those who don't like it hot.

Barshu caused a sensation when it opened, and has been described by Time Out as a 'must-visit' for fans of Chinese food.
