Serving traditional, authentic Russian food, Sobranie is a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Victoria. That's not to say that it's a sombre affair, though - everything about the restaurant is bold, from the food and vodka to the karaoke.

The traditional way to start your meal is with an aperitif, and Sobranie's horseradish vodka really packs a punch. Once that has woken your tastebuds, the aubergine caviar is a deliciously light option. I highly recommend it with the homemade rye bread - dark traditional Russian bread that also makes a great partner for the smoked meat soup.

For the main course, my rack of lamb was expertly cooked, tender and well-seasoned with herbs and a mild chilli sauce. Beef stroganoff is a classic dish and my partner's came served with a creamy mushroom sauce - simple and satisfying, this was a classic at its best.

The Russian Napolean cake is wonderful treat for dessert. Delicious layers of flaky puff pastry and cream; it's a favourite amongst regulars. The soft, sticky honey and walnut cake is another great choice and I thoroughly enjoyed rounding off my meal with a slice.

Up-tempo Russian music plays in the background and there's always the chance to get up and test those vocal chords - the restaurant is popular for karaoke. Alternatively, simply relax with one of the terrific Georgian wines or a refreshing Baltika beer
