The elegant yet understated Kouzu offers a Japanese fine dining experience. It's one of the capital's top Japanese restaurants. With its cool, contemporary design and clean lines, everything from the decor to the service is slick and refined, making it an impressive addition to Belgravia's dining scene. The high standards at Kouzu have earned the restaurant critical acclaim, and the restaurant recently won the UK round of the Global Sushi Challenge. On our visit, we kicked off the evening at the bar, where classic cocktails are given a Japanese twist. I sipped on a pretty Piña Colada with added Japanese herbs and spices to give it an unusual but enjoyable kick. We then headed over to our table to sample the exquisite fare. We began with delicately sliced salmon sashimi. The bright orange flesh of the salmon was tender, plump and delicious; served with yuzu soy, sesame seeds and ravigote sauce, it simply melted in the mouth. Next, raw scallops arrived on parcels of fluffy rice, alongside pickled ginger and strong, hot wasabi. Beautiful tempura prawns dressed with spicy mayonnaise followed. Served on a bed of crisp salad leaves, the fish was juicy and the flavour of the tempura batter was intense. This, for us, was the highlight of the evening and we could easily have devoured another portion. The roasted black cod, too, was simply exquisite - marinated in miso and served with fennel and celery salad, it was beautifully light and very well executed. If you expect desserts to take a backseat here, then you are mistaken. We finished with sumptuous dark chocolate mousse, which was more a work of art than a pudding. A perfectly formed dome of chocolate was flecked with glittering gold and served with apricot brandy and salted caramel ice cream. Dining at Kouzu truly is an experience, and part of the thrill lies in watching highly skilled sushi chefs at work. On our visit, the presentation of each dish was meticulous and no compromise was made on flavour, whilst the opulent surroundings served to enhance an all-round indulgent evening
