Close to the arty buzz of the Barbican yet nestled near a charming lake and the 14th-Century St Giles church, this smartly fronted bar and restaurant is unique. Cosy, pub-style decor includes comfortable rustic wooden furniture, Victorian-style mirrors and stripped pine tables. The venue is a split across two levels, so there is plenty of room for the many visitors who frequent this popular bar. Enjoy a leisurely pint of real ale while enjoying a view of the lake or do as we did and sample the fine food on offer.

We began with a Monmousseau sparkling wine from the very good wine list. It beautifully complemented my starter of cool, fresh smoked salmon and sweet beetroot - all in a deliciously light horseradish dressing. My friend loved her crayfish and avocado cocktail in Marie Rose dressing - a great spin on a retro classic. The generously portioned rib-eye steak and tower of triple-cooked chips made her gasp but she made short work of it. My sea bass had crispy skin, was skilfully boneless and was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The quality of ingredients was exceptional and staff were helpful but left us to chat and relax.

The treacle tart was tempting but we opted instead for a cheeseboard with deliciously runny Cornish Brie, Grubb Farm Stilton Blue and Lincolnshire Poacher cheese - now one of my favourites. An apple and beetroot chutney - with a bit of a kick - completed a fantastic course
