This carefully preserved Victorian pub has been pulling pints for the workers of Smithfield market, which is opposite the building, for more than 100 years. Despite its successful reincarnation in January 2008, during which a fashionable hotel was added above-stairs, the Fox & Anchor has managed to retain its original charm and clientele. Today, regulars and new blood rub shoulders at the stunning pewter-topped mahogany bar, which stretches the length of the drinking and dining room. The rest of the pub is an impressive sight to behold too - the curved bar, with a dedicated oyster server at the end, is set against a backdrop of fern-green wallpaper, Arts and Crafts tiles and a black leather banquette, and there are plenty of cosy snugs to hide away in.

'Hops, chops, cuvées and duvets' sums up what the Fox & Anchor is all about. The menu is quintessentially British, featuring unashamedly Victorian dishes such as beef and oyster pie and kipper paté, with six real ales on tap to wash it all down with. Leave any airs and graces at the door - the flavours here are so moreish, you will find yourself slurping oysters, gnawing at bones and mopping up meaty juices with hunks of bread. A daily roast is carved in full view of eager diners, on an old-fashioned carving trolley; the supreme quality of the ingredients is easy to see, perfectly exemplifying their focus on simple food, done well. Drop by for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but note, they don't take reservations during the week for lunch.

With six bedrooms on the three upper floors, over-nighters are treated to an intimate and individual treat. Rather than having numbers, the rooms are named after local landmarks, such as St Paul's, Smithfield and Barbican. Even the standard features are special - there are sumptuous duvets, luxurious Miller Harris toiletries and rainfall showers. Yet it's the imaginative touches that really make the difference - each room has a photograph of its namesake printed on a fabric bed headboard, shapely old chaise longues have been rescued and upholstered in flock-velvet print, and reading lamps and butcher's chainmail have been used to create unique lighting.

Since the Fox & Anchor's skilful refurbishment, it can truly cater for any occasion. Whether you're here for a pint of porter or potted shrimp, to stay up all night with friends or rise with the lark to see the sights, you're guaranteed to be impressed.
