Porky’s is an American-style joint serving peckish Londoner’s Memphis barbecue food. Make sure you arrive ravenous, as quantity matches the superb quality of the dishes on offer at this upbeat venue. Diners are invited to feast in a stripped-back setting comprising exposed brick walls with vintage posters and cool lighting, although the interior isn’t the main attraction here. The bartenders at Porky’s create splendid cocktails and there’s an impressive selection of whiskies, with many available in tasting flights. After a couple of glasses of Barrel Aged Old Fashioned, we were transported to the Deep South thanks to Porky fries – almost a meal in itself, consisting of French fries topped with homemade baked beans, sumptuous 18-hour slow-cooked pulled pork and scrummy bacon-topped mac and cheese. We washed it all down with Porky’s Ice Tea; a heady mix of Earl Grey-infused Cognac, vermouth, Triple Sec and ginger beer. Next up came the Porky burger, which boasted a flavoursome patty, Monterey Jack cheese, crisp streaky bacon and pulled pork, served inside a fresh brioche bun. For the main course, we went all out and shared a plate of juicy ribs basted in delicious Memphis barbecue sauce, tender pulled pork, beans, slaw and pickles. The pulled pork was full of flavour and we couldn’t resist finishing every last bite. To complete the meal we had American craft beer. We managed to find space for desserts and were glad we did, as the cream pie with fresh cream, bananas, toffee sauce and crumbly biscuit base, and a subtle hint of bourbon, was delicious. With another two branches in Camden and Shoreditch, Porky’s is an absolute must-visit for all meat-lovers. They have beer pong tables at the Bankside and Shoreditch sites so you can battle it out with your dining partner before you pull up a pew. Be sure to keep an eye on their website and social media platforms for regular monthly promotions and updates.
