El Gaucho - Chelsea
Tucked away in Chelsea Farmers' Market you'll find not only one of the area's bestkept secrets, but also Argentina's best cuts of beef. A charming shack-like building with wooden tables, benches and saloon doors, El Gaucho is a quirky steakhouse that rouses the imagination; its interior clad with riding saddles, tack and ropes. Family-run El Gaucho brings a unique, authentic taste to the steakhouse scene, offering succulent Argentinian beef in a lively atmosphere. Serving everything from rib-eye to sirloin, rump to ribs, this place left us spoilt for choice. We were thrilled with our eventual decisions, as our steaks arrived cooked just how we requested them. Cutting into the meat was like putting a hot knife through butter, and every mouthful conveyed the original flavour, enhanced by expert cooking. We also loved the extensive wine list; the tipples are chosen specifically to accompany each steak, adding to the joy of tucking in. With such outstanding meat on offer, it would be easy to forget about El Gaucho's wonderful chicken, lamb and salad dishes, but that would be a crime. Vegetarians are deliciously catered for, and the less-hungry can enjoy nibbles like roasted aubergines or corn on the cob. There's a second El Gaucho steakhouse in South Kensington, near the museums and the Royal Albert Hall - just another excuse to treat yourself.
