Dinings Restaurant group was born 11 years ago, bringing quality food based on izakaya, or traditional Japanese bars, to the capital. It’s a trendsetter when it comes to offering exciting, innovative Japanese dishes like no other. The menu fuses traditional Japanese cuisine with modern European flourishes to create dishes that push boundaries. Inside, there’s a mezzanine level, bar area, sushi bar and a terrace, which tends to be packed when the sun shines.

If you’ve never stepped foot inside before, tell the attentive staff your likes and dislikes, and they’ll create a menu for you. They’re more than happy to advise newbies, and can recommend pairings. The staff take notes of diners’ tastes so when they return, they can tailor their recommendations. The quality of the food is why many choose to return.

There’s a lot to take in as the menu is vast, but the dishes change regularly to entice diners back to try something new. There’s a plentiful range of sushi and sashimi, signature sushi rolls and nibbles on the menu. Potato tar-tar chips (Japanese for taco) topped with toro tuna and jalapeño mayonnaise is a great way to kick things off, while the Scottish salmon with onion soy jam is a highlight from the sashimi selection. Fresh fish is caught on day boats in Cornwall. The catches are then utilised in dishes such as sea bass Carpaccio with fresh truffle ponzu jelly, hand-dived Scottish scallops paired with spicy taramo sauce, and seared yellowtail belly accompanied by yuzu-koyso – a Japanese chilli paste with strong yuzu notes. The freshwater eel and pan-fried foie gras roll with sweet soy sauce was the first of its kind to hit London. To drink, choose from a range of sake or try their own branded sake.

The Grade I listed building is steeped in history – Georgian windows and the lovely wooden fireplace are left untouched; the latter was supposedly a gift to Clementine Churchill when she once lived here. The colonial-style interior designed by Sagrada Design only enhances the dining experience. Outside catering is available and the venue can be hired for special events, too.
