Since its opening in October 2013, Amo Solo has brought a cool, laid-back and sophisticated atmosphere to the popular Southsea area of Portsmouth. With stripped floorboards, exposed brick walls and antique embellishments, this eclectic establishment feels right at home on the vibrant Albert Road.

Amo Solo is a family-run business, and we spent some time talking to one of the directors, head chef Curtis Daly. Curtis' attention to detail, insistence on progression and improvement and meeting with local suppliers have all helped to create the awesome menu. He explained that the family have spent over two decades visiting northern Tuscany, and that their Italian connections and love of Tuscan food has subtly influenced Amo Solo's menu. As a collective, the family has worked together to provide the restaurant with unique aesthetics, and an engaging and friendly service and style.

Chatting with Curtis led us neatly on to choosing our starters: an ever-winning Italian combo in the form of a rustic tomato and mozzarella salad, and some grilled tiger prawns. Delectable mains followed. I went with one of the available specials: divine lemon and thyme chicken in a mascarpone and white wine sauce. The chicken was cooked with absolute perfection, the lemon lending refreshing notes to the light, cheesy sauce. Meanwhile, my partner enjoyed another classic Italian favourite: Amo Solo meatballs with spaghetti. We finished our meal with toasted Belgian waffles with chocolate sauce and ice cream - a simple dessert, but beautifully presented and mighty tasty. It ended the meal on just the right note.

With the Kings Theatre just minutes away, this is a restaurant that is perfectly situated for a visit before or after a show. There was plenty of excited chatter and laughter around this warm retreat - large parties were lingering and soaking up the atmosphere, and couples were enjoying the intimate space afforded by a table for two. Having talked about just how much love and graft has gone into creating this notable venue with one of the owners, I can think of numerous reasons for sticking around at this charming sanctuary
