Situated amidst The Law Society's grand and opulent chambers, 113 Chancery Lane is a little off the beaten track, but well worth a visit. Everything from the decor to the food itself is a tribute to the traditional, with a distinctly modern edge. As well as familiar British favourites like fish and chips, the menu boasts a selection of Indian dishes by head chef Ranjit, which mix authentic ingredients with a contemporary style and presentation.

I began by sampling tandoori salmon packed with powerful yet nuanced flavours, served with the perfect accompaniment of refreshing thinly sliced cucumber. My companion enjoyed a delicate but rich goat's cheese tart, which was rather delicious. To follow, I took great pleasure in devouring the delightful pork belly, which was everything it should have been: crisp on top and moist on the inside. Our main courses were served with what were billed as extremely chunky chips - golden and triple-cooked, they certainly did not disappoint.

The dessert selection consists of an excellent range of light, sweet treats to round off a hearty meal. We tried the lemon posset, which was tangy and fresh. The menu is just familiar enough to be comforting, and just exotic enough to be exciting, as well as high in quality and surprisingly affordable
