Those after a fine-dining experience no longer need to travel into London. Fresh, locally sourced, seasonal ingredients are the focus of executive chef Andrew McLeish and his stylish menu. Proud holder of a Michelin star and four AA rosettes, Chapter One welcomes diners of every age.

We sipped cocktails while perusing the extensive menu. I particularly liked my starter of smoked haddock kedgeree with local squid, red vein sorrel and curry mayonnaise; the presentation could not be faulted. My husband's treacle-cured Loch Duart salmon with leek, beetroot, coriander and lemon mayonnaise was equally pleasing. As we waited for our main courses, we observed the modern decor and took in the vibrant atmosphere. It was clear that many diners were regular customers, some celebrating special occasions and all enjoying a warm welcome from attentive staff. I was looking forward to my Gloucester Old Spot pork with Granny Smith apples, confit garlic and smoked potato purée and it surpassed my expectations. Every mouthful was delicious. My husband's Josper-roast sika venison with confit shoulder, roast butternut, curly kale and venison jus looked almost too good to eat.

Banana délice with caramelised white chocolate and banana citrus sorbet for him, and iced peanut parfait with golden lime sorbet and black cherry pearls for me, were followed by exquisite petits fours and coffee.
