West Hampstead is blessed with a number of good restaurants, and one of my favourites is Mill Lane Bistro, a delightful establishment serving authentic French food in a cosy candlelit setting. Friendly owner and manager Cyril has worked in Michelin-starred establishments in London and Paris, but here he wanted to create an unpretentious neighbourhood eatery with fine-dining principles and affordable prices. The resulting restaurant, Mill Lane Bistro, is going down a storm.

Fresh produce and French classics feature strongly on the quarterly changing menu. Although I could have begun with a well-known Gallic dish such as puff pastry snails in garlic butter and cream, or frog's legs pan-fried in garlic butter, I instead chose something I had never tried before: salmon marinated for 48 hours in Grey Goose vodka with beetroot and chives, which turned out to be an inspired combination. The wine list naturally offers quality French varieties; we enjoyed a viognier and malbec with our main courses. The duck breast in blackberry sauce was heavenly, with its hint of rich dark chocolate, while the rabbit in mustard and white wine sauce was hearty and elegant in equal measure. The grand finale was a simply delectable pear tart. Many locals have become loyal customers of Mill Lane Bistro, and, with its ever-professional service and outstanding food, it's not hard to see why.
