Located in the opulent Grade II listed Sofitel London St James near Trafalgar Square and Regent Street, The Balcon combines elegant neoclassical lines with theatrical grandeur and Parisian-brasserie chic style. The setting is most inviting, offering the perfect place for a business lunch, romantic dinner or private party. The dining space is framed by large arched windows and fluted columns, while the spiral staircases provide a secluded space for the Champagne-tasting table. Separated from the main brasserie by silk curtains is a luxurious private dining room, which seats up to 18 people. The Balcon is open seven days a week for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, and is also ideal for morning tea and freshly baked savouries, a tasty plate of charcuterie or late night dinner à deux.
New Zealand chef Matt Greenwood, embodies French, brasserie-style cuisine with signature starters such as sautéed snails and chorizo, seared Scottish scallops and citrus-cured salmon with celeriac remoulade. Depending on the season, main dishes could include pumpkin ravioli with sautéed girolles and sage butter; Dover sole meunière accompanied by buttery potatoes and brown shrimps, and slow-braised Welsh lamb shoulder with carrots and cavolo nero and pea shoot pesto. The food is polished in both flavour and presentation; it’s impossible not to feel a sense of excitement as you anticipate each course. Desserts of apple and frangipane tart with crème fraîche sorbet and Port wine syrup, and Cointreau and chocolate souffl é with blood orange sorbet are divine.
