30 Mill Lane, Welwyn, AL6 9ET

With a white-washed exterior and hanging baskets filled with flowers, The White Horse in Welwyn is a quintessentially English establishment. The decor stays true to typical country pub styling with solid wood tables and chairs, wooden dressers and aged wood fl ooring. An intriguing display of jars and hops allow visitors to sample the aromas of the cask ale on offer, so seasoned beer enthusiasts can select an offering that best suits their tastes.

I began my meal with hearty market soup, while my partner had crispy buttermilk squid. My soup was a wonderful combination of cauliflower, blue cheese and bacon, accompanied by two slices of delicious sourdough, with a third slice resting atop the soup. The flavour of both dishes was spectacular and the portion size plentiful. For our main courses we opted for beef and cask ale pie, and lobster mac and cheese. The former was unashamedly hearty and wholesome, while the latter was a taste sensation, filled with lobster, crayfish and hot smoked salmon. Sticky lemon drizzle and poppy seed pudding polished off a fantastic meal and was accompanied by excellent lemon curd and tasty honeycomb ice cream.

With al fresco dining available, an ever-popular steak night on Wednesdays and a whole host of other exciting events, it’s no surprise that The White Horse is so favoured with Welwyn locals – first-time visitors here tend to become regulars.
