With a white-washed exterior and hanging baskets filled with flowers, The White Horse in Welwyn is a quintessentially English establishment. The décor stays true to typical country pub styling with solid wood tables and chairs, wooden dressers and aged wood flooring. An intriguing display of jars and hops allow visitors to sample the aromas of the cask ale on offer, so seasoned beer enthusiasts can select an offering that best suits their tastes.

I began my meal with caramelised red onion and blue cheese tart, while my partner had honey and garlic chicken wings served with cumin and coconut yoghurt. The flavour of both dishes was spectacular and the portion size plentiful. For our main courses we opted for beef shin, pearl onion and mushroom pie, and pan-fried sea bass. The former was unashamedly hearty and wholesome, while the latter was a taste sensation, as it was accompanied by pea and broad bean crushed new potatoes, clams and lemon sauce. Peanut butter creme brûlée polished off a fantastic meal and was served with peanut brittle and caramelised banana.

With al fresco dining available, an ever-popular steak night on Wednesdays and a whole host of other exciting events, it’s no surprise that The White Horse is so favoured with Welwyn locals – first-time visitors here tend to become regulars.
