The Don Indian Restaurant
Indian and South Asian
Step inside The Don Indian Restaurant and you’ll be taken aback – a traditional curry house it is not. The decor is modern and chic, the atmosphere busy and vibrant. It feels every inch an award-winning establishment, as indeed it is – The Don was named Best Newcomer for the South East at the Asian Curry Awards in 2015. The award is richly deserved, for owner Rasel Khan and his team work hard from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, offering the friendliest of welcomes, catering attentively to your food and drink requirements and giving expert advice on what to choose from the mouth-watering menu – perfect if, like me, you’re slightly overwhelmed by the breadth of choice.
Only the finest ingredients are used at The Don, and the high quality was demonstrated in every dish we sampled, tasting fresh and pure, as well as being beautifully presented. I started with delicious wedges of minced chicken with a roasted pistachio, paneer, onion and pepper crumb, while my dining partner opted for onion bhajis, which were deep fried to perfection.
From a bountiful list of house specials I then chose lamb adadiya – large chunks of tender meat cooked in a creamy garlic, ginger and coconut sauce. Labelled as a hot dish, it provided just the right amount of kick to leave my tastebuds tingling. If a special doesn’t tempt you, there’s a long list of traditional dishes to choose from too. My partner sampled the chicken bhuna – a medium-spiced combination of chicken, tomatoes, onions and peppers.
An Indian feast isn’t complete without sides, and we accompanied our banquet with saag aloo, pilau rice, The Don rice (flavoured with fried onion and coriander) and two nans – one plain, the other stuffed with cheese, green chilli and coriander. If you have room for more, there’s a host of flavoured ice creams and a range of special teas and coffees.
Booking at The Don is advised, as it is busy even midweek – and keep an eye on their website and Facebook page for information about special themed nights throughout the year, featuring tributes to the likes of Michael Jackson, The Rat Pack and Elvis.
