Almost concealed from the main parade, Bar Bodega's discreet signage and understated exterior hides a gem. The feel is Victorian-gentlemen's-club-meets-jazz-club, with red walls, heavy drapes, and deep leather sofas - Bar Bodega welcomes you like a long hot bath after a rough day.

Jason, Aga and the rest of the team have created a perfect haven for the over-25s who can't seem to find a decent bar. The gentle breeze from the ceiling fans causes a hundred candles to flicker, encouraging growth on the spectacular waterfall of wax hanging over the cavernous fireplace. Once you open your first bottle, picked from the all-encompassing and sensibly priced wine list, or choose your aperitif from the extensive collection, you'll just want to kick off your shoes and never leave.

The distinct lack of screens and gaming machines encourages a pleasant mix of mature drinkers enjoying a soothing evening of waitress service and conversation against a background of cool jazz.

Food is served through the week from the well-presented sharing food menu (treat yourself to one item for £3 or indulge in five for £12). Bodega is transformed on Sundays - enjoy exquisite roast beef, lamb, pork or chicken.

Examples of starters range from duck and orange patéwith bread and chutney, to pan-fried scallops with roasted hazelnuts, pancetta and mixed leaves. All dishes are accompanied by roasted thyme potatoes, steamed carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, crushed new potatoes, buttered wild spinach, Yorkshire pudding and jus; this may just be one of the finest roasts you've ever tucked into.

Your journey might take you from lunch to closing time, and perhaps along the way you'll have beaten your friends at Monopoly, read the newspapers and found room for something to nibble on later in the evening. Go on in and say hello, listen to Frank and the gang and while away the time until the late hours. Count the days until summer, when the artfully decked and spacious courtyard and the outdoor 'snug' will really come into their own. There are not enough places like this in the world
