Located just ten minutes along the A120 from Stansted Airport, in the charming village of Little Dunmow, Tim Allen’s Flitch of Bacon Inn is a modern British establishment in which to eat, drink and sleep. The Flitch of Bacon Inn has recently been awarded a Michelin star, making it the only venue in Essex to hold one.
Tim Allen, formerly executive head chef at the Michelin-starred Wild Rabbit in Kingham, is chef and partner at the Inn. Tim has been a chef all his working life and is passionate about serving the highest quality dishes featuring local, seasonal and authentic ingredients. Tim and his wife Magali have transformed this historical inn, bringing their very special combination of exquisite food and excellent service to Little Dunmow. Whether you’re visiting for lunch, dinner, cocktails or a romantic getaway, the dining experience here is designed to suit all tastes. Some seasonal delights include the Flitch of Bacon special comprising maple-glazed bacon, barbecued hispi cabbage, sautéed Orkney scallop, rose gooseberry and compressed apple; loin of Romney Marsh lamb accompanied by glazed shoulder, garden courgettes, Provençal flavours and olive jus; and Breton shortbread with caramelised white chocolate and raspberry sorbet.
There’s a comfortable rustic bar area where you can enjoy a cocktail or quiet pint, a relaxed bar meal, Sunday lunch or after-dinner drinks with family and friends. The restaurant also has three stylish rooms for overnight guests; each is named after rare breeds of pig, and are individually furnished with contemporary textiles and fabrics with king-size or four-poster beds. There’s even a stunning walled garden courtyard where you can relax, unwind and enjoy the Flitch’s delicious menus while revelling in the sun with comfy seating. You’ll also find complimentary dog kennels for those who want to explore Dunmow’s picturesque surroundings with a four-legged friend in tow. In the summer months a vintage Citroën van doubles up as a cocktail bar.
Tim, Magali and their friendly team take pride in serving fine food and hand-picked wines in a relaxed setting, as well as hosting guest chef dinners, monthly wine club dinners, Christmas Day lunch and other seasonal delights over the holidays.
