Ray and Sandra Ellis have owned The Rising Sun for the past four years; in that time they have turned this traditional local into a popular and well-loved meeting place - a local hub of village spirit. Over the past year alone, The Rising Sun has featured an impressive 314 different beers from 95 breweries and held three beer festivals. It's no wonder it was named 'South West Essex Pub of the Year' in 2012 and 2013 by CAMRA.

The kitchen is open on Sundays and serves traditional, home-cooked roast lunches. At around £7.95 for a choice of roasts and desserts at £3.95, including profiteroles, apple pie and chocolate pudding, the food comes with great value for money. Our main courses featured succulent meat, crispy Yorkshire puddings, golden roast potatoes and a selection of fresh vegetables on the side. The portions were generous and well presented. Small but thoughtful touches further enhanced our experience; a carafe of water was waiting for us on our table and the staff checked whether we'd like our gravy served separately. We also noticed a pleasant outside seating area under the trees - next time we'll dine alfresco.

If you appreciate a great Sunday lunch and a quality beer to go alongside it, then a visit to The Rising Sun is a must
