The Feathers Public House & Kitchen has established itself as a wonderful place to meet in Rickmansworth. Manager Iain and his team have retained a traditional pub atmosphere, whilst delivering efficient and friendly service. With dark wooden tables and chairs, wainscoted walls, beamed ceilings and stone floors, the 14th-Century building has a certain charm about it. The lighting and colour palette create an atmosphere conducive to an intimate evening meal, as well as a quick cosy pub lunch. Outside, the charming beer garden offers diners the chance to enjoy a spot of alfresco dining in summer.

The menu is extensive and caters for a wide variety of tastes. What will tickle your fancy' Perhaps a classic favourite such as fish and chips, bangers and mash, rump steak or lamb shank, or a lighter option such as poached haddock. The latter was delicious, accompanied by clams on a bed of mashed potato and topped with a quivering poached egg. Neighbouring customers recommended the beef, ale and Stilton pie, packed with incredible flavours. As with the main courses, the starters offered a wide choice, with several vegetarian options available. Choose everything from rustic breads to smoked mackerel and pancetta cakes.

From the dessert menu, we chose the chocolate Martini and the vanilla and white chocolate cheesecake - both were light and luscious. The cheeseboard, accompanied by plum, ginger chutney and walnuts provided a great alternative to the sweet dishes. Meals are excellent value, with starters and desserts ranging from £4 to £5 and the most expensive main just £15.50 for the rib-eye steak. A children's menu is also available until 2.30pm on weekdays and 4pm at weekends.

The Feathers successfully combines a convivial old English pub atmosphere with all the advantages of modern international cuisine. The service is friendly and personal. And a final word of advice for those who are tall - remember to duck or grouse, as beams are low.
