The Rosebud Pub
66 Hurst Green, Brightlingsea, CO7 0EH
It wasn’t just the heat from the roaring log fire that exuded warmth as I stepped over the threshold of The Rosebud; I felt the friendliness and homeliness of this local pub and restaurant immediately. Owners Tom and Sarah work tirelessly to create a home-from-home atmosphere, and given the number of regulars, this has obviously been a success. There is a convivial, family-friendly feel, evident in the number of children happily enjoying the evening with their parents. Settling down at our table, which was wonderfully situated to take full advantage of the blazing fire in the brick fireplace, my dining companion and I browsed the menu. The Rosebud is a seafood restaurant at heart, but a number of alternative dishes are also offered. On Sunday, diners can enjoy a traditional roast or relax in the conservatory with afternoon tea. The menu changes on an almost daily basis, dependent on the availability of the locally sourced produce. My companion chose chicken liver pâté with mixed salad and red onion chutney, followed by a slow-braised lamb shank so tender it simply fell off the bone. This was followed by chocolate brownie and ice cream. Meanwhile, I indulged in a delicious dressed Cromer crab starter, followed by seared sea bass with broccoli and crushed potato. I rounded things off with an excellent apple and cinnamon crumble. Every dish is expertly prepared by Tom, who recommended a very palatable South African sauvignon blanc to complement my sea bass – it was a perfect choice. Situated in the Essex town of Brightlingsea, with enviable panoramic views over Brightlingsea Creek and the open sea beyond, The Rosebud dates back to the early 19th-century and was originally two fisherman cottages. The restaurant can accommodate around 40 guests, while the conservatory, which overlooks the creek and features a magnificent grape vine, has seating for a further 30 diners. There is also a delightful garden and terrace, ideal for relaxing in on warm summer days. Whatever the time of year and whatever the weather, you are always assured of a warm welcome at The Rosebud.
